Nieves is an environmental scientist by training, with over 16 years experience in international nature conservation.
She is an expert in the analysis and integration of species data into strategic planning and action, using clinical evaluation, partnerships and communication to build bridges between governments, experts on the ground, and communities. She has been involved in extinction risk evaluations of thousands of species worldwide, specializing in freshwater taxa, amphibians, and often neglected taxonomic groups such as saproxylic beetles and molluscs. In the field, she has carried out research in Nicaragua, Spain and the UK.
Her main focus at ETC-UMA at present is integrated biodiversity assessments in Mediterranean forests, and communication.
As passion projects, she was a board member of the Association of Spanish Scientists in the US, a video and podcast producer, and enjoys taking her kids into the mountains. In the past, she supported projects for organizations such as IUCN, Re:wild and Conservation International.
