Biodiversity is made of interconnected species and spaces which know of no boundaries; it can be found all around us conforming unique ecosystems supporting nature and people across countries and the seas. In the Mediterranean, with more than 21 countries sharing the same natural resources and threatened by increasing global changes and pollution, transboundary cooperation reveals itself as a must for survival.
We at ETC-UMA believe that the preservation of our biodiversity and the services they provide to Mediterranean societies should be based on sharing science and strengthened cooperation to be effective, and that countries need to actively engage in environmental challenges at Mediterranean scale. We so foster the creation and transfer of new biodiversity knowledge across countries and among different natural resource users, and strongly encourage decision makers, local actors and Mediterranean societies to co-manage and assume their role in ensuring the functionality of healthy Mediterranean ecoregions and all their peoples.
